Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
Upon further review, the casting number on the engine is 24142, which relates to an early TC block.

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
All very interesting, which leads me to wonder if the theory that the engine stamping is a date code and mine is 15 C 5 (15 March 1945), if it could possibly be an engine built over a year earlier could end up in #0777? I don't recall when MG restarted production after the war, and I have seen an ex...

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
The MGCC T Register has done some work on T Type engine block date castings, including the date coding used, and you can find our conclusions at https://www.mgcc.co.uk/t-register/registers/t-type-chassis-and-engine-identification/#castingdates Using this code, Duncan M's block is dated as 8 April 1...

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
Check the engine production date code, which is a few inches above the dipstick hole. First number(s) is month, and then D indicates 4th decade of 20th century, last number is the year specific to 4th decade. ie D 9 = 1949. My TC was made in October '49 and the engine was made a couple months befor...

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
Duncan, Thanks for reply, but I’m not questioning the chassis number, I just wanted clarification of the different types of engine plates. As I said previously, I’ve seen the round center plate with TYPE XPAG and TYPE XPAG TC, but mine has neither so I was looking for clarification. Tom, Thanks. Dou...

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
You know Tom, I didn't think of that possibility. So many items have been replaced on this car, some with TD parts, when I realized the round XPAG tag was missing I simply assumed the engine was swapped at one point and the tag transferred. I think I like your version better. ; ) Yes, the car is TC0...

Re: TC Brass Engine Tags
Thanks Tom. That pretty much confirms my suspicion that this tag was initially on a different engine block. I’d love to see those pictures.

TC Brass Engine Tags
Are all TC brass engine tags the same? I have a very early TC that has a brass engine tag, but it does not sport the round center stamped with TYPE XPAG. I've also seen tags that are stamped +TYPE- XPAG TC.

Aluminum Instrument Panel?
Anybody ever come across an aluminum/aluminium reproduction instrument panel on a TC? Just the center section, not the entire facia.

Personally, I'd consider LEDs. They burn brighter, but far cooler and will never melt the lens.

Re: TC steering column bush replacement
I can't help but think that is some sort of modification. I just took my steering wheel off the other day, and besides needing a new felt pad, I did not encounter anything like you are describing. I don't recall seeing anything like that in the Moss catalog either. Certainly, there are others on her...

Re: Exhaust Pipe
I finished reinstalling the muffler on #777 today. I managed to find the proper nuts for the new stainless steel exhaust system at ACE Hardware, of all places. My one conundrum was how to keep the pipe to muffler gasket in-place while I tightened it down, and then I had a brain wave. Why not spray s...

Re: Mg tc battery retention
On TCs the original Lucas 12-volt "tar top" battery was held into position with long threaded 1⁄4 BSF bolts going through tabs on each side of the battery. The bolts threaded into the captive nuts at the bottom of the battery box. TD's have a similar system but without the tabs and include a bar tha...

How far should the exhaust pipe extend? The tip in line with the end of the frame rail, or further?

Re: Grill to cowl fasteners
Brazing is pretty much the preferred method I believe Brad. It does discolor the chrome finish but in my case the only stud needing repair was on the bottom. so with some buffing and fine compound stick it came out ok. A high strength epoxy or similar solution may be available. Vibration is your en...

Grill to cowl fasteners
I had an unsuccessful afternoon trying to unsolder the screws that hold the grill in-place on the cowling, so I could move them to correctly align with the new grill (slats). I tried my soldering iron and I tried a Benzomatic, to no avail. I don't want to overheat or discolor the chrome cowling in t...

TC Fuel Sending Unit
Inside the fuel sending unit, there appears to be a fixed capacitor and two movable blades, one on each side, connected to the external float. As the float moves down and the blades rise the right blade comes in contact with another fixed blade at the top, which is connected to the electrical contac...
