Luke, what you say sounds like "running on" which happens when carbon build-up on the piston tops is hot enough to ignite the fuel. Which would happen if it was running hot, despite what the gauge says...could be any number of things, but check the timing and that the mixture is not too weak.

Re: Gearbox: First motion shaft nut removal
Years ago, while driving TC0978 in London, thankfully quite slowly, the rear of the propshaft detached itself from the pinion flange...I was using Nylocs, probably not new. Luckily I always carried a few spare nuts & bolts so was able to get going again. I dread to think what the effect would have b...

Re: Gearbox: First motion shaft nut removal
It is indeed a L/H nut: a lot of people do not have a fancy adjustable C-spanner, and use a drift on the slots.
We have made these nuts (Moss say NCA, have not checked the others), might have one left, but can easily make some more.

Re: Location of Windscreen Cowl Bracket Holes in a TC
Assuming you already have a windscreen complete (they are expensive things!) your best bet is to offer it up to the cowl. The shape of the side brackets and the cowl itself will determine the best position. Brackets do vary (and TD ones are not the same) and of course your Ali cowl might not be the ...

I had the same problem when I bought a new repro valance from a well-known M.G. firm in West London. So the number plate is angled down, maybe an advantage if I go through a police camera speed trap!

I am inclined towards it being TC - defo narrow tank and i think TA doors had more of an up-sweep to the top edge. Would need to see TA/Tb and TC together to be sure.

As usual, Steve is spot-on with everything he says! Fitting a Panhard rod certainly makes a difference: I supply them and many of my customers have remarked on the improvement. To my knowledge, nobody has taken one off, but I have heard of people removing their VW conversion and reverting to a prope...

Re: pinion nut torque
I'm coming in rather late to this discussion! Steve is absolutely correct, in fact having too much oil in the diff. will have a churning effect giving heating. The lower level plug is there for a reason: pour oil in until it just begins to trickle out. Replace plug with a new fibre washer. AS to the...

Rob's photo shows some badly worn teeth! By using the adjustments, the lever can be brought onto a less worn part of the quadrant .which will give more positive locking. Often the pawl gets damaged as well: I have these in stock, and am about to do more quadrants.

Re: Early UK Registration
You can only get Trade plates if you are a trader or a car repairer. They are for collecting a car they have bought, or for driving it to test it: NOT for general use! The trader also has to have insurance that covers them to drive any car (so not cheap!)

Re: Early UK Registration
As I understand it, Trade Plates were used by dealers to move cars around, so that they would be covered by their insurance, and also because the cars were not taxed. We used to have a very simple system whereby an owner taxed a car for either 6 or 12 months, and if they sold it, the log book was ha...

hi Steve - those tappets definitely look suspect! We have discussed this many times over the years: the originals were cast iron which was heated up (don't ask me to what temperature, others or Mr. Google will know) then placed on a cold iron (or maybe steel) plate in a process called Chill Quenchin...

Correct! The hinges face forwards, held down by c/s screws directly onto the plywood floor, with carpet over them.

Re: TC rear axle pinon shaft oil seal
The drive flange boss is 1.25" diam, so that seal would be a very poor fit, unless a speedisleeve bumped it up to 1.75" The boss gets scored, because grit gets drawn into the scroll (it is doing its best to keep the oil in - at least when going forwards - but also drags in dust & grit, which is what...

These cannot be "original TC " bearings because they have seals, which were probably not invented in 1945!

As Steve says, you should be able to drill the stud: start with a centre-drill (very short, so they don't wobble about) and gradually work up in size. With a bit of luck you might be able to get the bits out with a scriber and a magnet. A thread insert might work, if there is enough metal at that po...

Re: TC Gearbox Jumping Out of Second Gear
When I first did mine, many years ago, because it was jumping out of gear, the main wear was in the front layshaft thrust bearing. The layshaft constantly rotates, and because of the teeth direction, it is pushed to the front. These simple little thrust washers are quite expensive, and only availabl...
