Re: There's a right way to do most things
Chip, The people with short attention spans want this thread to be over, and frankly so do I because nothing bothers me more than to read "enough already" messages. I've already addressed everything you say here, probably several times over. The things you mention are the reason that I was willing t...

Re: chassis No.
Newsflash to list: Having mismatched chassis and plate numbers is not desirable. It's not a 'point of originality.' It's not an interesting custom feature.
It's a careless mistake.

There's a right way to do most things
And the right way in this case is to convince Mrs. Meismer that her purported "TC 3409" should be renumbered on the plate and in the paperwork to the chassis number. That makes her car more correct, and legal, and it frees up the legal status of my frame.
Anything else is a botch.

No apology this time around
In the past 12 hours I've been advised to: 1. Grind the number off my frame 2. Fill the number in with bondo 3. Buy Mrs. Meismer's car 4. Pick a number any number 5. Stop acting like Badger 6. Take the car to Mongolia, title it there, and then reimport it into the U.S. And with all this advice to si...

By the way ...
I don't know how it is in the stable craton of North America, but here in the borderlands, the INS occasionally checks to see that all the numbers of a vehicle match. And they know where to look.

Notice also that the "C" is significantly bigger than the "T". These were probably two different sets of stamps, mixed together. Maybe the original zero and one of the letters "went to war," like the green ink on packs of Lucky Strikes. Mark TC 3409a Well I'll be. I just went out to look at my frame...

TC 3409a
Bringing everyone up to date: in late October I purchased a frame through ebay. Due to some minor missteps, it has taken about five weeks to get the frame from Chicago to San Diego. When I announced the purchase on this list as frame number TC 3409, I heard at once from Mrs. Alma Meismer, who wrote ...

After a quick wire brushing
Wire brush elimates the "zero is an eight" theory. In two sources of light: http://www.ocotillofield.net/TCproject/3409a.jpg and http://www.ocotillofield.net/TCproject/3409b.jpg It looks more light a nine than any other number, but is it a definitive nine? Did frame stamped nines look like this? Mar...

Here at last
I took delivery of my frame in the parking lot the TA truck center in Ontario, CA, and drove it the last hour home. The five-week saga is almost over; now I just have to identify the number. Here's a photo: http://www.ocotillofield.net/TCproject/3489.jpg The zero in "3409" might be an eight: 3489. O...

Thanks Dave, Charles, and Terry, for speculations on the TC3409 discrepancy, one of which -- or all of which! -- may be correct. I have no reason to doubt your word, Mrs. Meismer. I do not have any reason to doubt the word of the person who sold me the frame, either. It isn't in my possession yet, so I am a little perplexed, but not too much. There is an explanation for the discrepancy, and it will be worked out in due course...
