TC 7881 For Sale

LF 3-4 view.JPG Right front 3-4.JPG After 28 years, I am selling my beloved 1949 MG TC roadster. The only reason it is for sale is that I am having the “been there, done that” feeling, and I’d like to move on to other things. This car has never had the body restored, although it was painted twice t...

Half-shafts: Information and Issues

Probably fifteen years and 25,000 miles ago, I had a half-shaft snap. Upon examination, it was discovered that a previous owner had welded the old half shaft to the hub, effectively ruining both items. At that time, Phil Marino was making new half shafts, out of better material, and with a morse tap...

Re: TC footrest

A TC owner here in Vancouver did make a very attractive and useful footrest for his TC. It show up in a picture in an old issue of TTT, I think it may have been in May, 2008.

If your shotgun rider has short legs, may make a significant increase in comfort.

Re: TC footrest

My mistake. It is TTT, not TTT2. The article was in Issue 26, from 2008.

March 2008, which shows how my memory is failing to function as planned! One of the photos clearly shows the footrest.

Re: TC footrest

I have a buddy who built a footrest for the passenger side. I believe you can find it in TTT2, about three years ago. I think it was titled how to make a coffin more comfortable, or something humorous like that. It should show up in the pictures.

Re: TC radiator badge replacement

Hi Nigel, When I bought a replacement radiator badge, I found the new piece was curved too much, and would not fit flush with the nose piece on the rad shell. I'd appreciate if you could let me know how yours fits, and from where you obtained it. Mine has a few battle scars, but nothing like you des...

Re: New TC Rear Wheel Cylinder Faulty

Had a similar experience many years ago. When I bought my TC, all four brakes were a soggy mess, in fact, I'm not sure why the car even stopped. At that time, I decided to have the original wheel cylinders sleeved with stainless, and took them to be done. When I went to pick them up, the machinist p...

Re: TC center dash panel gauge placement

Agree with Steve, and that's how my car is set up, but it actually makes more sense to put the oil press gauge in the ammeter spot. This is because it is obscured from view by the steering wheel if it is in the correct position, but easily seen in the other spot.

Re: Accessory dash socket

I have had to cover my accessory socket with tape to prevent a short with the keys on the keychain that hang from the ignition switch lock. Does anyone else have this problem? Perhaps the sockets are not wired correctly?

Re: Ignition question

I well remember my MG-owning uncle, when he told me: "Carburetor is a French word. It means 'Leave it alone'" I use a Unisyn to sync the carbs, then the well-known "adjust the jets and lift the piston" technique to set the idle mixture. I check the plug insulators for colour, and if all is well, lea...

Re: Possible modifications to your car

I can say that I've also done some of these mods to my TC, all of them virtually invisible, but the change in the performance and reliability of the car has to be experienced before judging the mods. Boring/sleeving to 1466ccs, along with the 4.625 rear gear transforms the car. The better axles, tap...

Re: Clutch Linkage Adjustment

It's the wrong time of the year to climb under an old car here in Vancouver, so I can't check mine easily. AS you mentioned, Bryan, one travel-limiting stop ought to be enough. Somewhere, I saw an article or a photo, that described a modification which involved substituting a renolds style chain for...

Re: Volkswagon steering box conversion

Can anyone direct me to the supplier of the new and improved Pitman arms, aka droparms. I did purchase the new knuckles and spindles from Tim Patchett, so that worry is no longer. I do like to take my trusty ole TC on long drives in the mountains around here, and I do NOT want to die young, or have ...

Re: Volkswagon steering box conversion

Contact Bud Silvers, of the TABC list. He is the authority on this, at least in North America. He's also engineered the kit needed to make the conversion.

But hey! Why would you do this to such a vintage car? Mine steers just fine with a properly rebuilt Bishop CAm box.

Re: Altette Horns

My TC Altette does not have the depression--perhaps it's not the right horn, but my impression is that both styles were used interchangeably. Anyway, it hoots, and scares the chickens out of my path! Incidentally, I had to do some work on my horn, to correct some previous well-intentioned work by a ...

Re: TABC chat

Let me say that I did install the stub axles from Tim, and am well-pleased with them. At the same time, did the king-pin bushings, and had custom thickness shims made for the vertical clearance. You have to do this sort of thing to appreciate what a difference it makes in the steering and stability ...
