Ok - just looks like in original pictures there was some kind of permanent backing plate - smaller but similar to the one on the rear - that had rounded corners and a raised rolled edge 1/2" wide around it as depicted in Michael Sherrell's TCs Forever book on page 202 top photograph that the license...
