Re: Kill Switch and Fusible Link?
Steve, I would be wary of fusing the ignition circuit as fuses fail for no apparent reason and to have the engine stop at awkward moment, think overtaking in heavy traffic, could be more dangerous than your car's security is worth. Fitting a battery switch with a removable key, however, is a good id...

I can vouch for AMP in Hull also. The windscreen repair and rechrome Piet did for me was excellent.

Re: TC water temperature guage
Any modern temp. gauge can be used as long as you connect it as intended and keep the metalwork of the gauge free of the metalwork of the car. A wood dashboard or similar insulating panel will be fine for this purpose. No need to change polarity.

I believe the /2, /3 refers to the current limit that they are set to. You would have to refer to the Lucas literature to find out what the actual setting are.

...or even "passed"? Seriously though I can see more of this ahead as we move into a more and more risk averse world where drivers are increasingly unwilling to take responsibility for the lethal machine they are driving. This will inevitably be compounded by the view that our quaint little cars are...

Re: Datsun steering box
Surely a flat topplate would be easy to fabricate by hand. A couple of hours with a hacksaw, file and drill should do it. They'll never notice that it isn't hardened.

I'd put the BC box back on to satisfy the jobsworths. Whether he returns it to the foreign box will then be the lesser of his problems. He might even like the original box.

Re: Abingdon Spares fuel sender
Duncan, all I set out to do, at great length so as to cover all bases, is to show that there is 12V on the contacts most if the time, and 2.5 Volts none of the time. I also declined to address the question of how this does not lead to an explosion. I could have attempted this but was aware I was on ...

Re: Abingdon Spares fuel sender
OK. Let's dig deeper into this 12V/2.5V controversy. Forgive me if the following sound patronising but I feel there is a need to be precise here. Firstly don't confuse current and voltage. They are different, but related, things. Voltage drives current through a circuit but the amount of current dep...

Re: Abingdon Spares fuel sender
I just want to correct the idea that the sender unit has kess than 12V on it. It hasn't. 12V is switched to ground when the fuel level is low but is reduced to 2.5V by the winding around the original dash lamp. The use of 12V or less at the tank unit has nothing to do with an understanding of fuel c...

Re: 1946 TC valve clatter question
lynn, the early carbs had no damper in the dashpot, relying instead on the heavy piston to give the required enrichment on accelleration. Pre-war SU carbs were the same. The spring and damper came in later when the piston was made of lught aluminium insread of heavier brass. As to replacing the elec...

Re: Front brake binding
Undo the bleed valve to eliminate retained fluid pressure to be the problem. If so, suspect the flexible pipe. Have you recently changed to silicon fluid? If so suspect swelling of the seals covering the small return hole or perhaps just a blockage in the master cylinder due to muck.

Re: 1946 TC valve clatter question
lynn, there is a way of checking which cam is in there by measuring valve opening and closing pionts but I do not have it to hand just now. Perhaps someone else will come up with it for you. I disagree that there are no new 19thou. cams out there though. I believe there are so it's best to check. Fo...

Only if there is a leak from there. Some people block the holes on the top of the rockers to bring the pressure up. You do have the gauge take off on the block and not the head, I assume.

Re: I can remove the pump aceite without remove or move from place the engine?
Just a thought. Is your oil gauge connection on the head connection banjo or on the lower block connection? It should be on the bottom one to avoid the pressure loss in the head supply pipe.
Good luck.
Ian

Re: Car hood
i have had a Don hood on my car for thirty years and, apart from fading a bit, still works fine. This may be due, however, to the fact that it is rarely if ever erected outdoors. It is always up when in the garage to keep its shape though. One thing I would do differently is to not buy double duck. ...

Tone, and you and I Ray, already has an electrical instrument as near to petrol fumes as it is possible to be as the 12V contacts for the fuel level light run submerged in the stuff most of the time.
