Q labeled or initialled damper internals

Post by Duncan M » Tue Jun 09, 2015 9:40 pm

Was rebuilding front dampers on TC9866 recently, and came across a curious "Q" initial on the blued (spring) steel piece that holds the adjustable valves in place. The Q was on both ends of each front damper, total 4 Q's. One source on rebuilding dampers talked of taking this valve on each side of damper completely apart to clean, but I found that to be unnecessary. After thorough cleaning, I returned the valve settings to the way I found them. The round pieces behind the Q-clip can be rotated to block off more or less through holes. Anyone else noticed any markings here? Curious if it is an initial, or perhaps a specification marking?

The "circlips" holding the two ends together have a top and bottom side. Top side with openings for hydraulic (motorcycle fork oil) fluid to enter;

And bottom side.

I've heard of other parts being marked but this is the first time I've heard about the inside of a shock absorber being marked.
