TC Stub Axle to Axle Movement

Post by Koopz » Sun Sep 12, 2021 9:54 pm

I am working my way through the restoration of my TC and now onto the front axle. I am replacing the king pins etc but note that prior to disassembly there is approx 1 mm of movement up and down on the king pin between the stub axle and the main front axle.

What are the tolerances here and if too great should I insert a hardened steel shim to reduce this. If so what is the acceptable movement.

Many thanks, as usual.

Steve

The factory specifies 0.004" between axle and knuckle. Shims to on top, thrust washer on bottom.

I wrote an article about rebuilding these for the TCMG newsletter a while back. You can see it on pages 10-11 here: http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/chassis/20MayChassis.pdf
