Has anybody ever heard of the spider gears breaking in a standard TABC diff. The reason I ask is that a friend had the spider gears break on a Morris Minor Diff fitted to his TC a few days ago. I have never heard of it happening to TC spider gears in my 60 odd years of owning TCs in Australia, 2268 for over 54 years which is a bit scary!
My diff is standard TC and the gears are still intact touch wood, but given that there doesn't seem to be a supply of them from the usual people e.g. Doug Pelton it would be a concern if they did break.
I have had a diff cage break and I am still running a standard used one fitted many years ago and so far so good. I might add that my diff runs tapered roller bearings on the crown wheel, and also the pinion, again this was done many years ago and has been very good to date. I thank Mark Jablonski who was the main "engineer' In this exercise.
Happy and safe motoring in your TABorC

Re: TABC Spider Gears
In the back of my mind I feel like I've heard about people breaking them, but I can't think of who or whether it really happened. I've seen lots of ring and pinions explode and damaged carriers. But I don't recall actually seeing a broken spider gear.

Thanks Steve, I think we are on the same page there. Anyway looks like Doug P can supply them if it comes to that, lets hope it doesn't!

Re: TABC Spider Gears
I have all the parts to rebuild a TA/B/C diff - CW&Ps, Spiders, Sun & Planet gears, Centre Housing (new & repaired), Taper Roller Bearings (and ball brgs.). These are all new, top quality (apart from repaired centres) whereas I think Doug's are used (judging from the photos in his cat). In addition, I have splined & taper-fit halfshafts & hubs.
I also offer a Rebuilding service, although that would be rather expensive for Oz & N. America!)

On the subject of postal costs. Although not helpful in this case but something to be considered. My daughter rebuilding a `65 Mustang here in the UK has a contact through which she has used a regular container shipper to import various wings etc. which have been added to a load from the US at a favourable cost. No doubt there are opportunities to ship via part containers to both the US and Oz etc. That is of course if you can wait!
