Unusual fault

Something I`ve never met before but an intermittent firing fault. Whilst watching my engine on tick over in a poorly lit area I noticed an occasional spark from number 3 lead to the distributer cap. First thought was a crack but no on investigation I discovered the brass disc at the cable end was broken into a number of pieces. Replaced and a road test and so far so good.

A while back I rescued a guy in a TD on the side of the road. His car died and despite owning it since new, he couldn't figure it out. I was a bit stumped too but then as he cranked I heard the telltale sound of an arc. Couldn't see anything in the bright sunlight but on a hunch I moved the coil wire away from the dipstick and the car fired right up. Zip tied it away from anything metal and off he went, with new ignition cables on his shopping list.

Yes Steve there`s a lot to be said for watching your electrics in the dark. The spark in my case could just be seen down through the securing nut to the distributor and only intermittently as obviously the engine vibration shook the broken disc.
