TC water temperature guage

Post by jddevel » Sun Oct 22, 2023 3:52 am

I`ve a TC (positive earth) with a standard temperature gauge running from the radiator. I`m thinking of adding a secondary gauge from the rear of the cylinder head possibly using a modern electrical gauge. Are any available that work on positive earth as I don`t currently want to convert to negative earth-as simple as I read this is.

one solution can be a MODERN Digital Kitchen Thermometer with a separate sensor (normally more than 1 mt long)
I have used it for My TG cooling OIL radiator-Have inside a AA battery- sold By Amazon at around 20 Euro

Not sure why the interest in aftermarket temp gauges on a TC. I have never seen a coolant temp higher than 180F on a long & hard drive when ambient temps were well above 100F. Highest temp I have ever seen with infrared heat gun during or after a long hard drive was 150F for engine oil and 130F for the differential oil. Brake drums rarely exceed 120F with stock gearing. Overall, one of the coldest cars I have ever driven. If anything, the engine might benefit from an oil "cooler" with a thermostat to raise the oil temp. If your radiator is boiling over when the engine is shut off, you got a problem.

Why aftermarket- purely not concerned about originality, one of economy.

Considering that the TC did not come with any temp gauge, any temp gauge would be aftermarket. The stock radiator does have a place for a (aftermarket) probe to be installed, and is a suitable enough location -- unless you are experiencing significant coolant loss. Usually a bourdan type mechanical temp gauge would be used, for those that are trying to get by with a clogged up cooling system. Of course the same mechanical bourdan type probe and gauge used for coolant temp can also be tapped into the sump and used for monitoring oil temp.

Any modern temp. gauge can be used as long as you connect it as intended and keep the metalwork of the gauge free of the metalwork of the car. A wood dashboard or similar insulating panel will be fine for this purpose. No need to change polarity.
