TC Generator Dimensions?

Post by loustaller » Sat Aug 03, 2024 3:24 pm

Can someone measure a TC generator for me? I'm looking for the overall length and the distance between the front and rear aluminum end plates. I have a Lucas generator which does not have the tach drive adaptor on the rear plate and am interested in knowing the overall length to see if a stock TC generator and tach drive will fit in my application.
Thanks!

Not sure what you are after, but the length of the case, including end plates, for the original dynamo is 6 1/8 inch. That does not include the tach drive/oiler, which sticks out farther. What you will find about the original TC dynamo is that it has a larger diameter than most, and new commutator assemblies are not available.

Duncan, thanks for your input. Here's the basis of my question, I have a '49 TC with a Lotus 1600 twin cam engine and would like to be able to use a generator that has the tach drive at the rear plate. The generator on the Lotus engine does not have provisions to attach a tach drive to it. Because there is limited space between the back end of the generator and the custom engine mount I am trying to determine if a TC generator and tach drive will in fact fit. You can see the limited space there is but I'm still hopeful there's just enough to fit the proper generator and the factory tach drive. Thanks

Since originality is out the window already, why not run an alternator with tach drive mod? Or if you want the generator you could get a sprite generator much easier and cheaper, and it's smaller in size.

Steve, I was thinking about a TC generator because the drive and cable would fit the back of the generator with the factory cable fitting the original Jaeger gauge.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all the threads are the same. And if not then you could just get the matching tach box, or with Jerry's alternators he can probably put whatever thread on the back you like.

The Jerry you are referring to, is it Jerry Felper?

Yes, sorry I should have elaborated. He sells small alternators with tach drives. Considering there is already no way to fool anyone looking in your engine bay into thinking it's a stock TC, I don't think it would look out of place like it would on an original one. Just a thought since TC generators are getting scarce.

I'll give Jerry a call to see what he has or could recommend. Thanks!
