Moss supercharger on a TC
I was looking at the install instructions for their supercharger kit and it is based on a TD. I assume someone has done an install on a TC. The front plate and engine mount is quite different between the two. Any difficulties installing the front mount and tensioner? Choke cable routing? Anything else to note?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
I've seen lots of them installed on TCs and I didn't notice any mods required. The kits are designed to fit under the bonnet. I haven't done one personally but there are a few of them in our club so I could get photos at the next meet if needed.

Dave:
I have the Eaton M45 supercharger on my TC (but not purchased through Moss). I have a TF XPAG motor so there may be some differences, but I'd be happy to take some pictures for you. Terry Peddicord designed the system and I believe he does or used to supply Moss with their units.

I have an Eaton M45 supercharger fitted and working well. The installation was fairly straightforward - although I did have to pare back a steel gusset supporting the radiator header tank to allow for the pulley. I have seen no mention of having to do this in any instructions.

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
Thanks all for the information. I have the Moss supercharger on order and it should be here Friday. My confusion on the install is that Moss based the instruction on a TD and made no mention of the TC. But that was only in the instructions downloaded from Moss US. Moss Europe has a later version that has a paragraph describing the two holes that need to drilled in the front engine plate.
I finally went with the Moss unit once I gave up on my Shorrock blower. I had hoped to keep the TC more period but after a number of issues with the Shorrock I just decided that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.
Now to undo the last 6 months of work.

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
Yet another question. I'm waiting for the Moss supercharger to arrive so I have nothing to look at. Is there a source of manifold vacuum for my PCV system? If not I suppose I could add a tap.
Thanks,
Dave
Thanks,
Dave

Hi,
on the pressure side there is nearly no vacuum, when ideling with 2000 rpm minus 4-5 PSI,
between carb and SC body there is a plug to access for vacuum,
cheers Carl

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
I don't think a PCV system will work with a blower.
Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
It would be possible to fit a PCV with a supercharger but it is very involved. Essentially, the problem is that a PCV is designed to operate with a normally aspirated engine. I have an exhaust scavenging system for crankcase evacuation which works with the supercharger.

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
I would start out with just some sort of breather on the valve cover hole, and run the draft tube. After you get it running properly you can start experimenting with oil separators, check valves or whatever- if you like.
I notice on the Moss page for the supercharger they make no mention of starting out with an engine with lower compression ratio. I guess they figure everybody knows? Even with the moderate boost involved with the Moss unit, if you start out too high, maybe even 9:1, you could be running into problems with not being able to run pump gas. Then you might end up having to play around with "thicker" head gaskets. Not the end of fo the world..

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
They're probably writing the instructions for a stock engine, which would be fine with the blower. A lot of us have raised the compression significantly, so you would definitely be better off lowering it back down to around 8:1 if you plan on running more than a few pounds of boost.

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
Well, the blower is installed and running well. The 1/8 vacuum port is a bit small limiting airflow. The Wagner PCV wants at least 3/8 so I'll have to work around that. But I miss my slow running control. Has anyone rigged up a fast idle mechanism?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi,
I have made a slow running device for our TC. Its just a lever at the carb shaft that is driven by the original cable. Made it of brass. If you want, I can take a photo.

Hi Lindi,
I would like to see what you made. The lack of slow running is an annoyance.

Dave

Re: Moss supercharger on a TC
Hi Dave,
here is the lever. Placed on the carb shaft, pushes up with his bent end the carb control rod and opens the throttle. The Pics have to be turned 90° to the left.
The outer part of the slow running cable is fixed at this part made also of brass and fixed at the air cleaner.
Slow running device is very important. I wouldn't like to go without it !
If you need other pictures, let me know.
Cheers

Thanks Lindi,
Looks like a good working setup. The stock Moss installation doesn't leave much room on the inner side of the carb.
I've got an idea of something that may work. I'll try it tomorrow. I've attached a picture of the current Moss arrangement.
Since they used basically an MGA H4 carb they could have equipped it with the A's fast idle mechanism.

Hi Dave,
indeed there is not much room. Can you move the bits from one side to the other ? Maybe I had to do the same, but I just don't remember. Too much time passed, too much things done since then, sorry.

Hi Dave,
i you have a proper return spring on the accelerator lever you don´t need the little
return spring on the carb shaft - so you have much room for a idle lever,
cheers Carl

Thanks for the suggestion, Carl. After a very interesting experience in an MGA many years ago I think I'll leave the
secondary spring in place. If I could add 3 or 4 more return springs I might do it.
But it may come down to replacing the shaft spring with something else.
