MG bit - What is it?
MG bit - What is it?
Acquired this neat little MG crested aluminum casting in a box of bits at a swap meet. Assume it is an accessory piece maybe to a side valve lifter access plate or an earlier MG engine bit before the TC's. Anyone recognize it and it's purpose in life ?
It's about 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" in size.

Looks like a side cover vent to me.

Could it be "home made" . It dosen`t seem to have an oil sealing face so perhaps it was a cosmetic thing attached to some after market product.

The vents were mounted to a stand-off to allow air in and out of the crankcase! No sealing surface.

Re: MG bit - What is it?
It is definitely the vent cover from the finned aluminum side cover on an XPAG engine. I've just bought one!

Looks great Ian, Wish I had the entire assembly instead of the breather bit! Do you know if it is available on this side of the pond?
Thanks for sharing..
Cheers and happy holidays,
by the by.... I just rec'd Michaels book the other day. Thanks again for sharing the bulkhead info as I've already started filling the non-standard holes in the sheet metal. Hope to have it all ready for re-spray in the spring.

Re: MG bit - What is it?
Hi Marv,
Don't know about availability or who made/ makes it nor how old it is. Just bought it from Germany but know it was on a TD
It's not the same as the Moss one currently available which has two vents. I needed it as I'm fitting a magneto instead of the distributor and the breather outlet was in the way of the magneto as its bigger than the distributor. As its more rigid than the steel one I'm hoping it also seals more easily.

Thanks Ian:
At any rate, it looks great. I hadn't looked at the Moss accessories area but will take a glance. I've got other areas of more pressing importance on the old gal right now anyway.
Cheers,
Marv
