new owner

Post by hammondatp » Thu Jan 07, 2016 1:12 pm

Hi
I have just imported a 1948 MG TC from LA. Vin TC5173. Could you tell me anything about this car. I am partucularly interested in knowing if it was registered in the UK prior to being exported, and if so what might the original reg be. Also any other factory info.
thanks
Mike

Does it have a small brass plate on the battery box under the top two that says "MADE IN ENGLAND"? If so, it was never registered in the UK from new, might have been re-imported back and registered and then came back across the puddle to the U.S. but that's about the only scenario where it would have been a UK registered car! From my limited knowledge and what I've been told by others.
It's only a few cars newer than mine (TC5141), so without looking it up, I can tell you it came off the line in April of '48 or very early May '48. My car was April 1st, 1948.

Cheers,
Marv

I owned this car from 1955 to late 1956 - can't remember the exact dates. I bought it from a man named Donald Snelbaker at a garage just North of York, PA. It was original except for a chrome mesh grille that had replaced the original vertical bars and the lack of a muffler. It had a straight exhaust pipe into which a 'silencer' could be fitted at the end (it was wonderful open). I was in school at the time and just scraping by and at one point had to decide whether to keep the car or stay in school. I made the wrong decision.

Fond memories. In recent years I've taken to occasionally googling TC 5173. Here it is!

Marv: Mine is #6905 (Dec. "48) with "made n England" plate. I read somewhere EXU's were stamped EXU before the #. Still learning.
