Lucas 40048AF measurement
Lucas 40048AF measurement
I'm trying to determine the difference between the Lucas 40048AF distributor and the Lucas 40162 distributor. Both are DKY4A type distributors. According to the Lucas parts catalog the 40048AF distributor was installed on the MG TC from 1946 to 1949. I believe those were the years when the distributor had the micrometer advance clamp installed. The 40162 distributor was installed on the TD beginning in 1950 with a simple clamp and no micrometer adjustment. I'd like to know if the 40048AF had a longer body shaft (the part going into the block) than the 40162. If anyone has a 40048AF distributor would you be kind enough to measure the length of the body shaft from the shoulder that sits on the clamp to the centerline of the driving gear? Thanks.

I'm away from home at the moment but maybe this link will help?

Thanks Steve. I've seen that doc. But Bob talks about the DKY4A distributor but does not indicate if he is talking about the 40048AF distributor ot the 40162. Both models are DKY4A. I'm just curious if the 40048AF was changed to the 40162 because the micrometer advance was no longer being used. If you have a 40048AF I would certainly appreciate the dimension requested above. And thank you for this post.

Re: Lucas 40048AF measurement
There is no difference that I am aware of between the body of one versus the other. DKY4A distributors as used on XPAG all use the same body and are therefore all interchangeable. The only difference would be the stock advance curve.
The 40162 continued into TD production, and since the TD did not use the micro-adjuster, a 1/8" spacer was required to make up the height difference.

I have rebuild my XPAG (for a TC) with a second hand distributor. It just has a simple TD type clamp, not the micro-adjuster. Do I have to put an extra spacer underneath it?

See the article linked above. If you are using a DKY4A or D2A4 with a TD clamp in place of the original micro-adjuster, then you will want to add the 1/8" spacer to make up the difference in thickness.

Thanks Steve. I have a DKYH4A so it looks like I am good with the TD clamp only. Cheers. Tim.
