TC generator front plate

Can the front plate on a TC generator be successfully welded? The mounting hole on mine is very worn so needs to be repaired. I am not sure if the plate is steel or cast iron. If it is cast I will have to braze it up.

Pretty sure it's cast, just like most of the engine.
