TC under coat

Post by ian theobald » Thu Sep 12, 2013 4:34 am

As you have noticed I have now completed king pin renewal and now have stub axles correct way round.
In the process every part has been cleaned and painted.
What i have noticed on my TC is that every part is coated in a greenish undercoat when sanding back to re paint
I have noticed that whether it be the chassis rails ,rear backing plates to brakes or anything I touch , Like King Middas everything I touch has a green undercoat.
Would that be the original factory coating or has my car had some very thorough coating many years ago.
My car was purchased after being advertised for restoration at a bargain price but after some hardcleaning think preservation is the way to go. Apart from the fact that someone goofed up with the front end assembly it appears some real work has been done in the past.
Rear diff is later model with ends cut off and TC ends welded on ,Datsun steering conversion, new front springs and shocks..
The motor is not original but someone in the VIC club Australia advised me that from some records they had that it has been unchanged for last 30yrs. Motor really runs quiet but leaks from rear and spits oil out of back of starterand right side louvers ,one they may fix but is part of the character.
It would appear that being left in a carport near the ocean has seen corrosion start where the oil did not cover
but a light sanding and touch up was all that was required.
I suppose given the age of the car it would be reasonable to assume that it was restored in the past and now ready for a 2nd time around. Hope pictures give some idea of progres .Ian

Looking good! There would be no undercoating form the factory, just paint. Chaissis is sort of a semi-gloss black and under the fenders is body color.

Hi Ian, There's a possibility that the greenish undercoat is a self-etching primer. Whilst self-etching primers are used for the very first coat of paint, most are quite thin followed by high-build undercoats. However, some self-etch primers are bulked-up and can be used to form a substantial undercoat as well.

Good looking car...and I'm in agreement with Eric with the self-etching primer possibility.
