Top radiator hose replacement

I have sucesfully installed my new heat shield and appears to have solved all problems so thought may as well tackle replaceing all hoses since hot weather has arrived.
I discovered that the bottom branch pipe was just about eaten away and that my car had no thermostat what soever.
Just as well system is not presurised.
The top hose was like new but not really sure the correct method of removal as the thermostat housing sits on studs so can not slide away and the hose has very little gap under the radiator.
I have undone every scew attahed to the radiator including cross bracketr and have loosened the bottom mounts and was able to remove the old hose.
The new hose is even longer so does one cut to suit.
Not looking forward to refitting.
I have also removed the bottom elbow below thermostat which is allow and partly corroded but should be ok.
One other question is correct way to fit gasket as it seems to have one corner with slightly more cover.
Thanks Ian theobald
