I prefer rebuilding as original. When solid state fails, it does so suddenly and without warning. An original mechanical regulator will show signs of its impending doom long before it leaves you stranded.

Jerry Felper of British Auto Electric rebuilds them.

Glenn,
John James’ list of suppliers (electrics section) includes the one suggested by Steve, plus others (http://ttypes.org/suppliers/). My RF91 was restored (in UK) by Bill Hearsum of Rockhall Auto Electrics, old school and not cheap, but it’s working well (http://www.classiccarwebsite.com/rockha ... -electrics).

I have transplanted the workings of a new later replacement regulator into my original, takes a bit of soldering and drilling of a hole or two but can be done.
