TA Gearbox Roller Bearings
TA Gearbox Roller Bearings
I am trying to source the roller bearings in the TA gearbox. There are two on the Layshaft and one smaller one on the Mainshaft. Unfortumately the ones I have do not have numbers on them and although I have supplied the measurements to various Bearing suppliers, no one can provide any. If anyone has the numbers for these it ought to be a simple matter to find them. I am in Sydney Australia but of course with this forum we have access to the world.
Can anyone help?

Re: TA Gearbox Roller Bearings
Thanks Gene,
my sentiments as well. I have now sourced the Layshaft Rollers and the Front Oil Seal. The layshaft bearings I was able to find through Surplus Bearings in Queensland, they came in a sealed box and are labelled SO932534 and 93324.YBC. There is no brand only the word Bearings. The Front Oil Seal came through North Shore Bearings in Waitara NSW. this is from SKF and labelled 11740. Both these are here in Australia. The Mainshaft Pilot bearing remains a mystery and as it was in good condition we put it back into the gearbox --- which is now reassembled and ready to put back in the car.
In November last year I posted a question about Slipper bearings and the Engine colour for a TA. There were no responses. Apparently our members do not rebuild TA's ?.
The engine colour is RED, a crimson/orange colour. I am yet to be given the name and colour code for this.
I don't know what slipper bearings he put in, but will advise when I pick up the rebuilt engine next week. I had until now retained the white metal bearings but had trouble finding anyone with a good reputation to do the work.

Phil,
Why not put your questions out on the yahoo forum site via email? I think there's a lot more people monitoring that than this site...you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Re: TA Gearbox Roller Bearings
Phil, received this via email from Ian Linton:
Phil (and Gene),
I was recommended to use Humbrol paint number 19 (Bright Red) and can provide photos if you wish. I found one larger (50ml) tin was enough to provide two coats over (any) primer for the engine, gearbox and all other parts with a modelling paintbrush. I can be quite economical! After 3000 miles the only place it has discoloured is on the cylinder head around the central exhaust port.
Equivalents I believe are Tamiya X7, Revell 31.
I sourced MPJG gearbox bearings from the MG Octagon Car Club (UK, see their website) so do not have manufacturer numbers handy. However I still have the old bearings so could look for marks on them if you wish. Replacing these bearings was quite easy, and seems to have taken up (nearly) all the slack in the box.
The only other things I did to the gearbox were to fit a magnetic drain plug (from Roger Furneaux) and replace the gear lever with a new TC lever from Moss Europe. The latter fitted perfectly and saved repairing and re-chroming the old lever. I sourced a TA gear knob from Sports & Vintage in UK, but they may be out of stock at present as they only did a short run. Octagon also supplied a new clutch lever shaft as I was advised that these sheared easily. I had to remodel almost all of the TA clutch linkage as the original was bent and badly worn. Again I can supply photos of most of this if it helps.
Regards to all,

(just back from a wonderful trip with the TA to Ypres in Belgium)

Re: TA Gearbox Roller Bearings
Joe Curto provided the following:
According to an R&M cataloge I have from the 1950's
MGTA
Constant mesh pinion ( 1st motion shaft) LJ 1 1/4
Lay shaft R211 I think these are same as TC as they do not show p/n for these under TC listing , and TC have different \p/n for the main shaft bearings
Main shaft MJ 25
Joe can be reached via email at: joecurto@aol.com
