TC distributor refurbishment

The centrifugal advance mechanism on my Lucas DKY4A distributor was damaged by a stray nut, causing erratic performance. So, I had it rebuilt and recalibrated by Martin Jay of Distributor Doctor. I attach some photos.
Martin informed me that my distributor was actually a later type, identical in looks to the original, but with incorrect characteristics for an XPAG. There are probably quite a few TCs with the wrong distributor. Check ID numbers against those in the attached article (TABC library).
The unit is now calibrated to the original spec for an early TC, with a small ID plate to reflect this. The condenser is soldered to the base plate like the original (and good quality, according to Martin).
I’m expecting improved engine performance. Quite pricey, but I’m very pleased with the workmanship, and Martin's helpful and efficient service.

That's nice work. The plate is neat although I don't recall seeing anything like that on a TC before.

Hi Tim, From a survey of the original solder-in type capacitors, I've found many that have high series resistances due to poor manufacturing techniques. This can lead to reduced efficiency of the ignition system and possible failure. I wouldn't take anyone's claim that they are ok as gospel.

Thanks Eric, Martin’s rebuilt distributors have a three year warranty, and these T-type solder in condensers were made to his specification, so here’s hoping. The former base plate, points, and yellow wired condenser will make for a quick fix, if needs be.

Here’s Martin Jay’s response on the question of poor quality condensers for T types:

Eric’s right, the lower grade ones are poorly made & have a poor earth route & bonding to the can. Not ours, they're made in the old fashioned way & last for ages. The later T type ones 54413006, with a bracket off the shoulder are even worse in all the repro guises we've tested. I'm just waiting for 1,000 to be delivered, made to the correct spec. We've remade the cans & brackets, everything. I'm expecting to do well with them as no one globally has one that works currently.
