Is it really worth the bother to douse the air cleaner in an oil bath for it to do its job -- in non-dusty conditions? Dick Warren in clean Vt

I forgot to add that the reason I ask about the air cleaner is that the cleaner on my tcexu has the richt look outsidee but inside it doesnot look like the Brown Book picture. It is not all wire mesh but has a fluted (?) stiff cloth filter, much like a shop vac filter, covered by a metal mesh with 1/8" holes. What have i got? Dick Warren

Sounds like some sort of an owner modification or perhaps a reproduction? In any case the oily mesh really doesn't do much of a filtration job. I gutted mine and installed a Porsche 912 paper filter which does a nice job of filling the canister and not expensive.

The EXU's came with the standard air cleaner. The diagram on the innards of these filters in the brown book are pretty correct. The pic of innards below is the top part of the filter, and the tube goes into the larger tube. The mesh at top. Also mesh on the inside of lid as per diagram. It is an AC canister filter as indicated on the top outside of lid & (made in England) with only a patent # 391160 and no part # indicated. I removed only the parts shown. I can always add some fake mesh up at the openings. Filter I used is 7" long.

Sorry to hi-jack but I'll be looking for a complete filter and brackets. Mine is missing. Got about 9 months to get it so no rush.

Thanks

Mike Sherrell in his TC's Forever book says the clue to an original air cleaner is the convex shape between the rectangular openings. My second pic shows this best.

I just got an air cleaner canister from Moss (mine's missing). It has a paper filter, which is nice.

I also spent a few pennies on the decal that goes on it.
