Shift lever rattles in 2nd and 4th

Post by pschmidt4 » Sun Jul 12, 2020 2:56 pm

I have finished restoring TC6067 July 1948 and am getting the last of the bugs out (I hope). The shift lever rattles in 2nd and 4th only. 1st and 3rd are silent. The vibration increases somewhat as the gearbox warms up. No trouble getting into any gear and no frightening noises from the gearbox. The rattling occurs under load, not when I back off downhill.

Has anybody encountered this problem and dealt with it?

Thanks,

Paul

Is the spring, ball and pin assembly present at the point where the lever enters the shift linkage? Check that the spring has pressure on it and isn't broken. Some people also say that rattling under load is a sign of pinging, but I haven't found that to be a very reliable test. I suppose something in the drive line being out of balance could do it also, especially as the RPMs rise. But I don't think that would be load-dependent. I currently have a slight rattle at high RPMs but haven't looked into it yet.
