One more query for today: Thermostat Checking

So, I bought a thermostat of E-blub for $10 + s/h, intending to gut the thermostat shell and insert a modern thermostat in its stead.

To my suprise, what I received was a vintage TC 'stat that, besides the rust, crust, and peeling paint, appeared to be able to move quite satisfactorily.

Anyway, what I was wondering is how do I go about more thoroughly checking (possibly cleaning) the thermostat, such that I can take it and use it in my car as it is without worry? Are the actual thermostat mechanicals made out of brass and do they just look crusty, or are they steel and they are crusty? Is there a safe way to take it apart to really get a good cleaning? (it doesn't look that way)

If it opens up in boiling water (which I did, and it does), does that mean that it will be fine? Surely there should be more things to give at least a glance at but it is hard to see in the darn thing.

If it moves at the appropriate temperature in a pot of water, I'd go ahead and run it. Put a bit of anti-freeze in the mix to lubricate and reduce corrosion.
