TC original registration search

how does one go about trying to verify an original home market registration number plate?
i have an original registration document from 1955 and would like to know if the registration number plate was
the original issue for the car in 1946.

It looks like your original number was GMA 36?
G was a prefix to MA numbers which were issued by a certain county. There are online search tools to find that county. GMA appears to be Cheshire.

Then that county may or may not still have the record books. Some have been lost or destroyed, I suppose to save shelf space.
Then there are online registration checkers. You may have to pay to use these.

thanks for your reply with information.
yes, the registration number is GMA36 as was last registered in the UK. the car was shipped to the USA in 1964.
the info listed in the old classic car site you provided, coinsides with the oct 1946 build date.
i will continue to followup with the information you provided,

Hi Stu,

New on here thanks to Len Fanelli, I note that your car is not registered with the T register on the MG Car Club, it is worth doing this and then you can search factory information. Whilst the original number will not be there if you contact the Register they will have more information such as the garage where it was sold etc., and possibly more on the registration number.
