What is the maximum front axle travel for a TC? My car measures approximately 3/4" from the rubber bump stop to the top of the axle . With the car jacked up and the tires off the ground the distance increases to approx 1 3/4". Does that mean the maximum movement of the front suspension/axle is only one inch? That just doesn't seem sufficient, or is it?

That sounds about right. Travel includes "squishing" of the rubber bump stop. This thread might answer some questions:

Suspension is not exactly the TC's strong point; then again the same can be said of Morgan.

What is more, there is a tendency for the front axle to move sideways! Axle location can be secured by fitting a Panhard rod and rose jointed drop arm and track rod ends - as supplied by Roger Furneaux - but the question with modification is... where do you stop?

Essentially, it's still an old car.

That's exactly where I stopped. Just a minor upgrade to help with the very different driving situation we find ourselves in, 76 years after the TC was released.

Panhard rod from Roger, home made rods with solid ends, poly bushings. Suspension travel remains the same though.

I have just received delivery of my new seats. The initial sense is that it is rather firm. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to soften the ride at all - or will I just have to grin and bear it ?

If an upholstery shop did the seats then they are almost certainly over-stuffed. They always do that to make them look better. I had to pull a bunch of padding out of mine after they were done. Greasing the springs helps, and worst case you can run thinner shock fluid I suppose. Also if they are new springs, they will take some miles to settle. I always install used, saggy springs on purpose. I like the lower ride and the softer rear springs seem to help handling and ride on rough roads. And the slightly saggy rear end looks fantastic on a TC. Not so much on it's driver though...
