On my TC I found that there was an earth to chassis strap both on the engine (bellhousing) and the gearbox prop. end. Is this unusual - I`ve never encountered it before.

To be honest, you can never have too many. Extra dash grounds aren't a bad idea, and some people also ground the distributor body.

so i know what to do in the next weeks
;-)
why a strap at the gearbox, there is no electric part
at the engine ok, it is necessary, starter and ignition distributor

The ground travels through the entire chassis, engine, gearbox, etc. Having a second ground connecting the engine (where all the electrical components are) ensures good flow of electrons! If the main ground is good then there's no need for a second, but if the main ground gets corroded or dirty then a second ground will take up the slack. Of course this is no substitute for keeping your grounds clean!

A slick alternate grounding setup on the TC can be seen in these pics of a TC once owned by Jim Hall. Scroll through the pics.

Battery ground cable goes to the bolt through the battery box that attaches right next to the left side of makers plate. Typical. Then another battery type cable is run from that same fastener (next to makers plate) down to the bell housing bolt right next to the engine number tag.
