Gents,

So I’ve been going through a bunch of to-do’s on my TC and on the list is the gear oil change. I’ve already done the rear axle using Dynolite Mild EP (someone had WAY overfilled it at some point in the past), took right around 1 litre of oil.

Now onto the gearbox, I’ve been letting it drain overnight and will be replacing whatever is in there now with Redline 75W-140NS per several recommendations here. I see the capacity is 1.25 imperial pints or .75 US qts and my question is about proper level; do I fill through the top filler port or can I use what appears to be a level plug, similar to that on the rear diff, on the lower side of the gearbox casing? I have a small hand pump with a hooked filler tube which would go in there but I wasn’t totally sure if that’s actually a level checking plug or if it has something to do with an internal component of the gearbox. Obviously, can use the top filler port and dipstick but was mainly curious about that plug of which I speak. Thanks in advance!

The dipstick is the proper way to check the level. I wouldn't be brave enough to remove any bolts from the side of the case.

Thanks Steve, I just wasn’t sure if that was a plug that allowed one to check the level, like on the diff. I have a lift so working underneath is easy.
