I'm putting together the steering box on TC7801. I have a Bishops cam installed from the previous owner. How much lubricant should there be in the box and how is it checked and/or added in the future? There doesn't seem to be any way of adding lube if it needs it. Also, what is the recommended type and weight of oil that is typically used today. Thanks,

OIL LEVEL on BISHOP steering box MUST BE at MAX LEVEL raise to the top - there is a special OIL for the steering box

But in my experience, STP or BARDHAL additives, little can- can be used
the grade is from 360 to over 400 this assures no leaks from the under box hole
and have a specific attitude toward high-pressure and hard work
WARNING: AVOID greases or other similar products - risk is a low lubrification -
due to the grease attitude going on box sides -and not on the gear
a plastic syringe can be used to fill a small quantity

I fitted this small brass flip-top header tank which ensures the steering box is always lubricated; filled with transoil 140. I bought the tank from John James (former TTT2 editor) years years ago.

TC calls for GL4 140 weight gear oil in the 4spd transmission, the differential, and in the steering box. Only place I use it is in the steering box. I check the level by unscrewing the 3 bolts and removing the top plate and shims. That gives a good opportunity to check the top plate for any unusual wear.

I use Redline Heavy Shockproof Oil. They recommended it over their 140W and other oils.
