Installing gas tank straps

As I was not able to tear the car (TC) down there many things I have to wonder how they fit on. The bottom of the gas tank straps is one of the.! My manuals do not tell me the detail I need, hence the request to you guys.

The top of the strap is obvious, the bottom of the strap is about a 3" threaded bolt with a nut on the end. right where this bolt wants to position it's self is over top of a hole in the round cross member. How ever, this conveniently placed hole does not go all the way through the round cross member, thus not allowing me to push the bolt part of the strap through, with nut on the bottom.

Have I the right straps, do I drill all the way through the bottom of this cross member or what?
Thanks, Pat

Hi Pat,
you need also two pair of clamps which are fitted on the rear cross member - the hole in the cross member
is for a dowl pin each pair of clamp have.
cheers Carl

As Carl says, you're missing a pair of split clamps Pat. The clamps embrace the cross-member with a dowel in the upper half locating in the hole you've found...

The clamps are secured with a bolt through the forward holes and the threaded tail of the tank strap through the other...

Note there is a similar type of split clamp bracket to secure the central leg of the spare wheel carrier to the same cross-member....
