Two piece Oil Filter cannister - replacement elements

Post by Marv » Thu Sep 01, 2016 4:37 am

Hello All:

Does anyone know if there are commonly available filter elements for the two piece oil filter aluminum canister (REF: Moss #435-380)? I thought I had seen a listing at one time that gave FRAM, NAPA or PUROLTOR numbers that could be purchased at the local auto parts outlet store rather than having to buy the MOSS filter element (435-390) at the current price of $69.99 plus shipping. Otherwise it makes perfect sense to move to the spin-on filter kit from Roger Furneaux, Doug or others.
Thanks in advance...

Marv,
I recently sold my two piece canister unit to another collector. To my knowledge there are no exact fit replacements available, however I did quite a lot of searching about the subject to see if anything better than the "sock" type filters are available.

Beyond special ordering an exact fit replacement there is nnot much in that department. However, the filter design is very simple, and there are many different sizes of filter available in the same design.

I think it would be a relatively simple and one time matter to find a filter of the right diameter (or close) that will fit the tc cannister and then to machine or cast new plastic end caps on both sides, one to simply hold the filter up and plug the bottom end of it, and the other to mate the filter to the cannister upper half, and to re use these parts each filter change. I can't imagine that a big old chunk of delrin or Teflon or even hdoe would be bad for this application. Heck, it could probably be done with a dense grained hardwood.

Yes, I know you sold yours and I recently sold another unit that I had. However, I was asked on a second unit I had for sale about "generics" over the Moss $70 element. I have hit a brick wall as well after thinking that I had seen a cross reference list at one time in the past. That being said, the option for a spin on filter kit becomes way more attractive for those of us that have better things to do rather than redesigning the wheel. That is what I have for my own TC. A Roger Furneaux spin-on kit.

I don't know of another source, but the spin-on adapter is my first choice. You can paint the adapter and filter and 98% of people will never notice it isn't original.

Some "originality" items were meant to be upgraded from 1930's and 1940's technology. The antiquated oil filter is one of them. I'm having my Furneaux supplied spin-on adapter black anodized and the FRAM filter is already black. Walla!, they disappear into the background very nicely. I'm also having my German supplied Aluminum thermostat housing black anodized to better resist the galvanic corrosion that occurs on those aftermarket items. Had to carefully press out the thermostat first. But it comes out nicely and will press in again with no problem.
