Drive shaft question.

Post by Mitchman2 » Sun Apr 29, 2018 8:59 am

My basket case MGTC came with 2 driveshafts. I have to have one shortened to fit between the original rear and the new 5 spd.

I can use either one, I'd like to pass along something that someone needs it as-is rather than alter it. Either will be fine in my car as the flanges appear to be identical.

Does anyone know which is the proper one for a TC and what the other might belong to?

Length, fully compressed at the spline:

37"L, 2.25" diameter.
43"L, 2.5" diameter.

Mitch, I have had my TC up on stands for the past couple of days, chasing some oil leaks from the diff. Lowered it to the ground and then read your post!

To the best of my ability with very difficult access, I got 122cm (44 inches) in situ. So i am guessing it is the 43" compressed one.

If no-one else answers I will jack it up again and get a more accurate measurement.

I'm surprised the Hi-Gear kit didn't come with a drive-shaft.

They normally do, but I got 2 with the car and have an MGA shaft. I've got 3, no need to buy a 4th.

Don't. I'm pretty sure the long one is TC. I'll hang onto the other in case I ever pick up another in need of good shafting.

Mitch-
I assume you are buying the Type 9 box outright from Hi Gear in UK. How much it cost these days to ship the kit (minus driveshaft) to USA?

Looks like a very sensible design, designed around the 5.125:1 ratio stock rear end. The 5th gear giving a final drive ratio of .825:1 or 79.2 mph at 4,000 RPM on 28.13" stock diameter tires. To do that speed and RPM keeping orig transmission would require differential ratio of about 4.3:1
