Clutch Linkage Adjustment

Post by Bryan PURCELL » Sat Nov 09, 2013 3:41 am

I'm in the process of replacing the clutch in my TC and, so far as I was aware there were were just two threaded clutch adjustments in the TC's operating linkage :
(a) at the threaded end of the chain link assembly ~ used to set 1" of free travel before the carbon thrust contacts the cover assembly's finger release plate ; and
(b) at the upper end of the lever that rotates the bellhousing/yolk shaft ~ used to limit how far the finger release plate can be depressed by restricting pedal travel to 3" (after free play).
However I've noticed that my TC has a threaded mount for another adjuster bolt accurately aligned with the rear of the pedal lever part way between the lever pivot and the point where the chain attaches.
It's true that the bolt and lock nut are missing and, possibly, may never have been fitted.
Can anyone out there shed any light on this?
Thanks.
Bryan
p.s. I realise that an adjuster in that position would overlap the purpose of adjustment (b) however, in theory at least, a travel limiter there could minimise overloading and consequent cracking of the bell housing.

It's the wrong time of the year to climb under an old car here in Vancouver, so I can't check mine easily. AS you mentioned, Bryan, one travel-limiting stop ought to be enough. Somewhere, I saw an article or a photo, that described a modification which involved substituting a renolds style chain for the boat-anchor style chain fitted by the factory. Supposed to have offered some advantage, but hard to see any.

Sure Gene.
Here are a couple of shots of an earlier TC frame (1869) that was easier to access than the car I'm currently working on (9716).
However both cars are identical in regard to the 'intriguing' (to me) threaded bolt hole that points (intentionally or otherwise) towards the lower portion of the clutch pedal lever.
This particular threaded hole has been no more than cleared of paint and rust using a tap that was not much more more than finger tight.
Of course, I'm just speculating about its 'original' purpose.
Though I'm not speculating about the affect that a bolt mounted in it can have in minimizing stress on the bell housing, etc IF the pedal is pressed harder than necessary to just touch the usual travel stop. I've observed how extra foot pressure can flex the 'downstream' lever which rotates the bell housing through shaft.
I fully expect that those in the Group who are sharper, and better versed in TC matters, than I will have better observations on the origin and purpose of this particular piece of frame and the hole it contains.
Regards.
Bryan.

Bryan,

I have the same hole on mine...no idea what it's for.
