Spare tire mount

Post by LaVerne Downey » Sat May 10, 2014 5:04 am

We got a new knock off for the TC and I was aware before hand that it had a spring/and key arrangement. I've looked through the manual and a half dozen books but I don't find any reference as to how and why of the key in the slot. Can someone elaborate what the purpose is and how to properly put it on the car?

One another note. While scouring the 1954 reprint manual I noticed in the various wiring diagrams a sheet for exports TC's LHD AND RHD. That was news to me. I thought they were all RHD.

The key fitting into the slot allows the MG emblem to always remain upright in the center of the knockoff, at least that is the only reason I can see. I think that is just charming considering the trouble they went to to have that happen. Look in the Moss catalog under spare tire, there is a drawing of the device, I think that will be helpful.

As for the RHD and LHD wiring diagrams...all TCs were RHD. Are you sure the diagrams weren't for home market and export?

I've heard of LHD diagrams being made, but no LHD car was actually built. It was probably something they considered doing at one point.

Hi does anyone have the sizes for the spare wheel badge key? Trying to make one but need to know position and size of the 'key' at the end of the bar.
Thanks Ian

It is about 1/8" thick, 3/8" tall by 3/4" long, it is mounted on the rod pointing down to the bottom of the MG insignia on the badge.

Thanks Stephen for info re size of 'key'. I need to know how long the rod is from the end of the collar, with the split pin, holding the spring in place to the start of the key and how long the rod extends beyond the key if you have those sizes? Thanks

Let's see now, the rod is about 1 7/8" from the edge of collar to its end and about 2" from the split pin to the end. The tab starts about an 1" from the split pin. Their is about 5/16" of rod sticking out from the end of the tab. Hope this helps.
