TC 6338 my wife and I just completed a 3888 mile trip.
TC 6338 has a few modifications:
Spin on oil filter
Le Fenilli "fast road" roller cam
Hard ex valves
High speed rear axle gears
Tapered half shafts
Bud Silver VW steering box
Full lip seals at both ends of the crank.
and one mod on the trip;
The Lucas condenser in the dizzy started to fail and burnt the points. I was able to limp to a NAPA store and installed a condenser at the coil for a '64 Chev 250. Disconnected the faulty one in the dizzy and off we went.
Ran Shell Rotella T 15-40 as it is easily available on the road.
We often cruised at 60 mph, 4000 RPM. A lot of miles and a lot of smiles!
My apologies to those I may have driven by but we couldn't stop in everywhere.
I just want to encourage those who are contemplating a road trip to go for it. TCs are FUN!

Very nice! I have a road trip planned in our TC but at over 13,000 miles, I don't have the time to do it at the moment.
How is that cam compared to whatever you were running before? Was the old cam worn out, or was it a fair comparison?

Can't really compare to any other cam as this is the only one I've driven.
I have owned TC 6338 since 1966. Never had it on the road with the original cam. My memory of driving it back then was that it was quicker than it is now but it wasn't much more than a chassis back then so it was a lot lighter.
The original was pretty much worn out so at rebuild I chose the roller cam to bypass all the cam follower wear issues with modern oils.
The cam works well, good power in the upper rpm range. Easily cruises at 60 mph + and will pull steadily from about 3000 up. !8,000 miles on it now with no issues.
Go for the road trip :-)
