How to mount the engine to an engine stand

Post by pleask » Mon Sep 08, 2014 5:55 pm

Got the motor out of my project TC just now and removed the clutch, went to mount it on my generic engine stand.

The only way I can see to mount it on the stand is to get some long (metric) bolts and use the holes where the trans bolts to. I have no confidence that these for small dia bolts will hold the engine.... any suggestions please.
Thanks, Pat

That's precisely what I do. It always scares me too, but people have done it that way for decades.

I just got the oil pan off (who designed the flywheel to be only removed with the pan off!) . Anyway, back to my question... could someone(s) please (again-sorry) clarify the mounting of the motor to my stand as the pans off and it just gives me the creeps.

I was going to use the two starter motor bolt holes and two of the upper (block) trans mounting bolt holes.

Is this REALLY correct? Kinda scares me a bit.. anyone have added support ideas to settle my paranoia?

Thanks, Pat

PS: What is the short shaft used for that is bolted on to the pan, near the starter?

It scares me too, but people often mount big V8s the same way. Here is a photo of how my engine was mounted to my stand on the last rebuild.

Could it be that you are talking about a TD pan (no cooling ribs?) They do have two short shafts bolted on on both sides of the pan ,- left/right hand steering for clutch??
BTW no worry my spare engine is also mounted on the stand, same way as Steve and has been there hanging for over 10 years!
