Purpose of slow running control on TC

I have all of the parts needed for the slow running control, except the spring device, and am hoping someone can explain what the purpose is. Moss has the spring device for just a few dollars, btw. I've seen Madhu Poroor's & Gene Gillam's pictorial on the subject here in the resources section.

It simply raises the idle speed for when the engine is running cold. Keeps it from stalling so easily. Choke controls on later cars incorporated a small cam on the throttle linkage so that the first bit of choke lever travel automatically raises the idle. On the TC, the choke and idle adjustments are independent of one another. I actually prefer it that way.

I think the coldest air temp I have started the car is around 40 degrees and the warmest 75 degrees. Either way, I have found that I only need choke on initial startup. It starts on the first crack of the starter. Does this only momentary choke sound right? If so, I clearly see why Steve prefers this over the system he describes above, as this engine is, of course, known for poor oil distribution at low RPM's. Warming up (of course) you want good oil distribution. Sounds like the "slow running" control makes perfect sense for this car for warm up. I have been opening the bonnet and manually choking and starting it, as I would also screw in the idle adjustment to raise RPM's for warm up.

TC9866 is nearly ready to take to the road again, following my mechanical restoration at a friends shop, after a hibernation beginning in 1955. My Father, who is still alive and well, prepared the car well for hibernation. :thumbs: Draining the fuel tank, leaving clean engine oil in, adding war-surplus rust inhibitor to the radiator prior to fully draining it, etc.

The enrichment device only is needed on start up and perhaps in really cold weather for a short time after. As Steve points out the enrichment device does not hold the idle up when cold, the slow running control takes care of this. Without this control you have to turn up the fast idle screws when the engine is cold to get a decent idle and once the engine warms you have to back them back down as the idle is way to fast. The slow running control works a treat when properly installed and adjusted!

where can I find a picture/diagram with shows exactly where the two wnds of the sprin go? Not s schematic whidh shows only general areas? The upper spring goes in a hole I cannot find; the lower dors what? Is it hooked/bolyed into the same junction as the slow-run cable boly, with V pointed toward engine? Dick Warren,vt
