Lost TA engine bolt

Post by Phil Dadd » Sun Apr 05, 2015 4:13 am

I have just had the MPJG engine returned to me after a complete engine rebuild -- but there is a bolt missing. In the block, directly above the oil pump there is a threaded hole. I think it is 10mm and the thread looks as though it is Metric fine, a thread common to this engine. Can anyone tell me what the hole is for and what sort of bolt goes into it? I have assumed that is may be used to prime the oil pump, but I have no real idea. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
Thanks, Phil

Phil...the primer plug for the oil pump wasn't introduced until the later TD's as far as I know...it certainly wasn't there for the TC so I doubt it would be there for the TA. Is the hole in the oil gallery?

Thanks Gene, My first T type was a TD C, the last of the TD's and from memory it WAS possible to prime the oil pump from a hole above the pump itself.
My question still stands. Do I simply plug this hole, or does it play some other useful or essential purpose? Keeping in mind that it is NOT an XPAG engine which has the generator mount above the oil pump -- and has what appears to be a plug next to and in front of this. The MPJG generator mount is in a completely different position near the front of the engine.
If you take the XPAG engine mount out of the equation, we still have a bolt in the Block, directly above the oil pump -- in a similar position to the one on the MPJG engine. What is this plug or bolt above the oil pump on the XPAG engine used for?
But back to my MPJG engine; If it is an oil gallery, do I simply plug it?

Phil, The 'hole' above the oil pump on the MPJG is where the Oil Pressure Gauge Line is attached. Not a bolt! A threaded fitting goes in first and then the Oil Pressure Line is threaded onto that fitting. Now, there is a bolt directly above the Oil Pressure Line fitting but (I believe) it is a locking bolt for the center camshaft bearing and not the one we're discussing here. There should be hole drilled through that bolt so that it can be wired to keep it from backing out. You mention 'priming the pump'. That hole directly above the pump is not for that purpose however that is a great place to pressurize the system prior to starting up a newly rebuilt engine for the first time. I used the garden sprayer method where you put a quart or so of oil into a clean sprayer, attach the hose to it and pump the oil through that fitting until you have oil flowing out all the rockers. By that time you can be pretty sure that the lower end has also received plenty of oil. Cheers and Good luck! Bill

Thanks , Gene, Bill and Mike for your input and good advice. I feel like a bit of a fool as following your information, I found the "bolt" attached to the Oil pressure line lying next to the point where it was to go back into the engine. I suppose 15 months since I took it out should allow for my memory lapse?
I am now to connect the gearbox to the engine, but have not as yet connected the clutch actuating lever. Are the fingers on the clutch yoke standing up or hanging down? Alternatively, is the reassembly explained in detail in any of the available literature?
Thanks again for your most welcome advice.

Phil, hopefully you're past this point by this date but if not, the fingers are up.
