Source for TC front hubs
Source for TC front hubs
I have been looking around for new front hubs for TC 9866. Looks like Abingdon Spares and Moss both carry them. Curious for any feedback on quality, etc. from those who may have gotten from those two places, and any info on additional sources. The current hubs are serviceable with some special locktite, but I would prefer to run on something where I could press in parts, and save the oldies for a rainy day. I will be doing the tapered roller bearings conversion, with the TC spacer and a custom made hardened steel single shim. Appreciate any thoughts.

Re: Source for TC front hubs
If it helps, I used Moss front hubs about ten years ago and they were perfect.
Re: Source for TC front hubs
It helps. Thanks, Steve.
Re: Source for TC front hubs
I used two new front hubs from Moss about a year ago. No problems so far. Just keep your knockoffs tight! Make sure your wheel hub splines are either new, or have very little wear and you should be good to go.

Looks like Abingdon Spares is up and running well. In contact with Martin, appears they have Made in England hubs. I mentioned the current Moss sale (ends 8/7) with hubs for $150 each, and he beat that price without missing a beat. Glad I gave it a try. I'll have to wait a week or so until their next shipment arrives, but for the price he said, I can wait.

You can also source them from Motor Wheel Service in England (www.mws.co.uk).

You could but Abingdon Spares can beat their price. Just thought I would mention that.

So how much can Abingdon Spares sell hubs for, inquiring minds want to know? And is sales tax charged?

Hi Bob, Depends on what hub you need but I can do front TC hubs for $135.00 and no tax for anyone not located in CT. Shipping one or two hubs from England gets expensive. Would you like a couple??

Re: Source for TC front hubs
For $60.00 Aus I had a local engineering shop machine shims for both hubs so that locktite was not necesary.
Wheels are rock solid with new king pins to match.
from what I was told ,Taper bearings are not kind on stub axles and to stick with original set up
From memory I was told spacer tube helps prevent any flexing and keeps all as one unit with load spread evenly..
had my stub axles magna flux crack tested while apart.
I would of liked to fit tapers to adjust any slack but guess originals were designed for a reason.
Remember reading sometime ago pros and cons on this subject.
Perhaps your part of the world as better road surfaces but roads are improing over here in Oz but what has happened in the past can be a worry.
When overhauling my front end discovered Stub axles were put on back to front with only a split pin stopping nuts undoing with wheel rotation.

Re: Source for TC front hubs
Originally they put on (deep grove) ball bearings. As Ian mentioned, the TC spacer tube is quite necessary for added strength to the stub axle. As is its proper fit, and around 80lbs torque on the nut.
Maybe there is another reason Ian's mechanic said not to use tapered roller bearings on the TC?
Ab Spares hubs are British made, probably from the place mentioned above.

Orson Equipment in the Midlands, UK manufacture TC hubs. Very good quality and prices.
