Relief valve refitting problem on oil pump-does it rotate?
Relief valve refitting problem on oil pump-does it rotate?
Hi all, I have a very important question to ask of you collectively. I've talked to a couple of guys who have been very kind and helpful to me off list about this, and neither is a 100% sure of the answer and it is a critical question. Neither the shop manual or TC's Forever discuss this issue (that I can find)
I have a '48 TC with a TD block, the oil pump I think (?) is a TC . I took the oil pump apart for cleaning etc, and have a question on the refitting of the Relief valve located in the top half of the pump.
Question: Is the seating sleeve/guide (at the bottom of the spring) supposed rotate or not? I found that when I tighten the big brass bolt head up snug it will not turn. When I loosen it off a bit it will turn, but of course if the bolt head is a wee bit loose there is a high chance of an oil leak.
If it is NOT supposed to turn, there are two holes in the bottom of the sleeve/guide so which way are they to be orientated? And why would there be "fins" on it such as you find on a water pump>
Thanks, I'm really stuck
Pat

That's a TD pump. The spring and ball insert into the black piece from the other side. The order should go cap, ball, spring, seat, washer, nut. The "fins" are there to allow oil to flow past once the ball has retracted due to oil pressure reaching its maximum setting. It does not rotate, nor do I believe it would it matter if it did. I'm not an expert on TD pumps so I can't say for sure if the black piece is supposed to be positioned a certain way, but if it is then I'd imagine it would be obvious.

Steve,
I was one of the ones not able to help Pat but now that I see the parts I think I can. I'm not sure that you're correct - check the Abingdon Spares catalog (http://abingdonspares.com/parts-catalog ... al-page-3/). It shows the ball going into the pump, then the "fingered" guide, then the spring, then the cap and washer. It mirrors the one in the block shown just above in the illustration.
I like this new Abingdon online catalog with the magnifier!!

Yes, same thing I was saying except that the spring and seat are reversed. BUT, the spring goes through the seat from either side (it's hollow) so it can go cap, ball, spring, seat, washer, nut OR it can go cap, ball, seat, spring, washer, nut. Obviously putting the spring into the seat and inserting them together would be easiest.
Either that or I'm completely mixed up in which case you can ignore everything I've said.

Thanks Steve and Gene, but what I really need to know is if the seating sleeve/guide is supposed to rotate or not? And if not, what position would the two holes in the sleeve/guide be at?

Isn't the hole in the cap just a straight hole? I don't have a TD oil pump to check, but if it's just a round hole then it doesn't matter how the seat goes in. It does not rotate as a matter of function.

This is from the Scientific Publishing Manual. I have never dismantled a TD pump but, if the holes you are referring to are the one(s) visible in both your photo and the drawing, are they not the route for the oil to pass out once the ball lifts, and then flow up through the spacer vanes?

That's my understanding of it.
