Dashboard centre panel colour

Post by SteveW » Sat Oct 10, 2020 3:44 am

As I'm going to have a rexine covered dashboard centre panel my understanding is that it needs to be painted in bronze. Is there a colour code (e.g. a RAL code) or a description for the shade of bronze that I should be using as I need to buy some paint. Having done a quick look on e-bay there are lots of different shades of bronze.

I should add that I'm probably being a little tight fisted here in asking the question. I know that I can buy some from the usual TC spares suppliers in the UK in a spray can, but £20+ to spray a few square inches seems a lot when there are a multitude of cans to be bought from elsewhere for 1/3 of the price if I can match the colour

I would think maybe bronze is too dark?.

I have a new instrument panel and to my eyes it is nearer to what is sold as Champaign gold.

Whether a true match for the original exists or not might be open to conjecture.

I would just go with what you are happy with.

Ray.

Hi Steve,
I have just repainted mine. I had some colour mixed by a company in Bolsover - I can send you the details and the code if you want. I think it was about £12 but I am very happy with the colour as it matches the original I found on the rear of the map light. You need to use etch primer as the centre of the panel is still chromed. It does look a little darker than the champagne colour but I think it is pretty close to the original. I have attached a couple of pictures (or at least attempted) but it is difficult to get a representative picture on camera.
Cheers

Tim

I have a NOS map lamp somewhere, and that's the exact color. The map lamp actually has almost a mottled look to the finish.

Hi Tim,

Yes please, if you could send me the colour code that would be great. There is a company close to me that can make up just about any colour in a spray can. I wish that I had taken the chance to come up and see you before the new round of lockdowns had started.

Hi Steve
I have attached a photo with the paint code for the panel as mixed by Autosupplies Bolsover. I don't suppose this code will mean anything to other suppliers. I think it is a pretty good match to the original (better than the picture shows) but the original does have a slightly more gold (champagne) tint. Autosupplies went to great lengths to get a match and I am more than happy with the results. I want to try adding lettering next and plan to use a modern version of Letraset. I know there are good restorers out there but fancy having a try myself - will probably regret it later but nothing new there!

Steve, it's not in the paint cupboard inside the garage but it may be in one of the garden sheds. I'll look in the morning when a) it's stopped raining and b) I have some clothes on.

Steve, I did look in the garden shed but it's not there. I can't think what has happened to it as I doubt I used it all. For the record I do have a tin of tan for the hood frame.

Hi Norman, thanks for looking.
Hi Tim, thanks for the paint code. As you say, it may not mean anything to another paint company. However, I have found an original painted item so I may take that to my local paint shop and see if they can make up a can using that as a colour match if they don't recognise your code. If not, I'll go to your supplier the next time that I'm in the area.

Steve
