Metallic Grey Color

Post by Rob Reilly » Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:40 am

Just in case anyone in the future should search for a sample of original Metallic Grey from 1937, here it is. Looks like a piece of steel. Not a very attractive color I think. Reminds me of office cabinets and machine shop equipment.

Very nice, a far cry from what you would see today. No little metallic sparkles in the mix, as you say looks more like what you would find on an adding machine.

Rob, would you happen to know an ICI code or other paint supplier code for the metallic grey?

No idea if anybody does, but if you look at the circuit breaker panel in your house or Home Depot or Menards or what have you, they are about the same color.

It is more work, but what would be very helpful to all is to polish out a small section of that good paint, then take the tank to a good auto paint store and have them scan and match it, assigning a modern paint code. They should even be able to note the amount of metallic to add for a good match. That would be a really good piece of info for reference.
