Front wing stay fitting.

Post by Ray White » Sun Jan 02, 2022 12:47 pm

Hello everyone. I am at the stage of offering up the panels on my TC rebuild.

Please note that I am starting from scratch as the car had been previously thrown together any old how with many incorrect fixings. Fortunately, I already have the 2 1/2" x 3/8" BSF bolts and nuts needed to secure the wing stays to the chassis brackets. What I am unsure about, however, is how to secure the stay through the wing to the headlamp support. It looks like two 1/4" BSF bolts should go through each headlamp support and clamp the wing to the stay.?

... HOWEVER... I found a 1/4" stud (with distance piece) attached to one of the wing stays.

Perhaps someone could confirm the correct arrangement.

Thank you.

hi Ray - I'm pretty certain (but could be wrong!) that the headlamp brackets hold the studs with spacers between wing and stay. The stays could have got bent over the years, so extra spacers (washers) might be needed.

Thanks Roger. Does look like the one surviving stud is original. I am not sure I like the stud/nut exposed on the headlamp bracket; a roundhead or hex head would probably look better... but at least I know now what it would have looked like.!

One thing I have discovered is that the wing stays are handed. They sure are a most peculiar shape.!

When I took the headlights and wings off my TA last year, there were rubber pads between the headlight brackets and the wings, but no spacers or distance pieces between the wings and the stays.

Hi Ray, I'll send you a few photos later today showing you the brackets ... basically there shouldnt be anything showing through the bracket on top/outer surface. It should be flush.
