Stub axle wear
My TF1500 has wire wheels and there appears to be wear in the right hand side (UK nearside). Whilst awaiting a suitable puller having never removed same yet can anyone draw/picture a diagram of the layout I should expect please. Until removed will be unable to determine whether wear is in the drum or shaft but early indications it may well be the drum. If that is the case what remedy could be suggested whilst sourcing a replacement drum or shaft.

With respect; in the U.K. the near side is the left side (or nearest the curb).

Well spotted Ray. Stupid elderly human error. Actually don`t know why I referred to a side. It is irrelevant really.

When you say stub axle wear, what exactly do you mean? I picture the stub axle as the spindle that the bearings go on.

Correct Steve. I have "play" with the wheel which I can attribute to either damaged bearings, wear in the splined hub holding the outer part of the bearings (?) or the shaft (stub axle) that the bearings run on. When I bought the car it had been both restored and the wire wheel conversion taken place. I`ve only done under 2000 miles and was carrying out a more detailed check on the car when the "wear" became obvious.

If your car has been restored it is possible that new wheel bearings have been incorrectly fitted. It would be interesting to see if you have taper roller bearings or the standard ball bearings. It may be just some adjustment required if you are lucky.

It could be so many things. If it's damage to the spindle or hub, I would of expect one side to be worse than the other. One thing I would check is that the bearing spacer is in place and the nut is fully torqued.

Keep in mind the knockoff (spinner) nuts on the right side of car should be left handed threads, and the left side of the car has right handed threads. The spindle nuts are threaded opposite of that. Not uncommon for people to under or overtighten the knockoffs. Symptoms of undertightened knockoff might seem very similar to a loose wheel bearing when the wheel is jacked up off the ground. Sometimes it takes a drive or two to expose undertightened knockoffs.

OK so all apart and obvious the small outside bearing (standard ball type) had had it. Cage damaged etc. new set-up hopefully arrives today. Regarding torque to castellated nut on standard ball bearings. Can`t remember the value. Can someone please advise me.

Doing a search I see the torque setting should be between 40 to 70 LBS/Foot according to previous advice.

Sounds about right. If using the original ball bearings, just be sure the spacer is in place before torquing. If using tapered bearings, make sure the end float is shimmed to approximately 2 thou at full torque.

Worn out hub (where the bearings go) is much more likely than a worn out spindle. Same wobble as from loose bearings or loose knockoff spinner. Once the hubs are worn (where the bearings go) there is no way to properly fix them. Buy new ones.
