Clang clang clang when loading right front wheel in turns
Clang clang clang when loading right front wheel in turns
Hi gents,
One thing I’d forgotten about and was recently reminded of, was that on fair sharp-ish left hand turns, I get this loud clang clang clang noise like if a bell is being struck and it emanates from (presumably) the right front wheel as that’s what’s being loaded on a left hand turn. Doesn’t matter if I begin the turn from a standstill or take a sweeping turn, if it’s sharp enough I’ll get the noise. On a gentle curve or a wide turn there’s no noise. Seems like almost a brake drum or spindle is flexing in some fashion, allowing a high point of something rotational to make contact with something stationary near the hub.
Admittedly, I didn’t look to see if I could find any impact marks on the tie rod ends as I had forgotten about that issue until I drove the car again recently. So am just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or has a pointer on things to examine.

Re: Clang clang clang when loading right front wheel in turns
The first thing I would suspect is a brake drum hitting the back plate. Check for play in the wheel bearings. In a worst case scenario this can also be a sign of a cracked spindle flexing in hard turns, which is quite dangerous. I might be inclined to remove the hub and inspect the spindle.

Steve,
That’s what I’m thinking and I agree, possibly loose bearing or crack in the spindle. I presume sending them off to be magnafluxed would be the best course of action?

Well it's never a bad idea. Replacements are available from Roger F, Bob G and Doug P.

The front hubs are a wear item on the TC. They wear where the bearings press in, and once pressed in the wobble can be detected. They will press in with the normal resistance, but once in-- the fit will be loose.
If everything checks out well, try swapping the brake drum from another wheel.

Good to know. The car is set to be laid up for winter soon so that’ll be a good time to investigate.

Ray,
Right, I’m done driving it for the season anyhow. It’s just sitting in my building awaiting a run down the street for a full tank of fuel and some Sta-Bil for it’s winter sleep.
