I've had bad luck with those reproduction Q12 coils. One went bad after 200 miles or so and the replacement lasted 50 miels before it quit. I put the old used coil back in the car and never had another problem.

Hello Steve
I was lucky
my coil works about 2000 miles ?!
and
it worked on the Eifel round trip
this event was the best I have experienced with the car
at the moment i have to restore some living spaces for my new tenants, windows, heating water tiles ceilings all new, just need to tile the bathroom
really a lot of work the last 3 month after my real job
so not to much time for my Taif what happened now would have happened last weekend, it would have been really bad

at the moment i have to restore some living spaces for my new tenants, windows, heating water tiles ceilings all new, just need to tile the bathroom

completely different car
:thumb:
:P
:D
changed the coil, now the engine has more than twice as much power
I could not believe it
I don't have the possibility to drive another TC so I didn't have a comparison and I think the Q12 repro coil got progressively worse.
it still doesn't run 100% smoothly, but it takes the throttle all over the rev range
in the next few days i will tune the carburettors again.

in the moment i have a blue bosch
a accuspark ignition for the original part with the condenser
and 0,7 distance at the spark plugs

brakes works perfect after overhauling last winter
and the steering also total different to last year

will drive the car the next days again, then i will take out the spark plugs and look if they are black as before

again my journey ends with a stop
no rain this morning, dry road
so i decided to take the car to meet a friend
the car is not running bad, as I wrote it is much better than before
I missed my friend so I wanted to go home again
when I was in the car, I wanted to start it.
like a week ago the starter runs but the engine doesn't start
a neighbour saw it and came over
he asked me about the car
he also had some oldtimers
I tested the ignition coil with him
with one spark plug no spark
then we took the middle wire and held it to earth,
we got a spark.
I didn't have a new distributor finger in the car yet.
I called my son to tow me home.
Then the man asked me if he could drive me home in his car transport trailer.
a good idea
So we did.
At home I looked in my big box that I had got with the car 7 years ago
There it was, a new distributor finger

the car now starts with a click

This little thing made me mad

I had ordered a new nitrile gasket for the valve cover, I have now fitted this.
at the moment I could not remove the AL side cover, I have to remove the distributor first.
this is a job when the car runs perfectly
first i have to solve the other problems, then i can remove the distributor and install this gasket, also i bought a micro distributor adjuster

In the next few months I would like to fix some oil leaks.

The drive for the speedo cable is included, that's where I have the biggest oil leak
I've read a lot about this job, so I'm a bit scared.

still raining outside, bad for me but good for our trees

bought the brake excluder a long time ago
saw the video from Doug
but he does it with the car disassembled
I have to do it with the steering and all the other parts
so I changed it a little bit
I made one part out of sheet metal like Doug did
but I took two steel pieces of about 40x40x 6mm and put them in first
so I could do it in my garage with a vice.
I put both parts in and went to the car
the first time I couldn't pull it over the second pedal
it slipped off the brake pedal
but the second time it worked.

a work i want not to do again ;-)

I just use a bit of lubricant and slide them over. It's a pain but they do go on.

Castrol Red Rubber Grease or equivalent would be ideal. Made from non-petroleum (vegetable) oils, you will have some around if you rebuild your own brake system components.

Hello
not a good run at the moment
after hard work all day I wanted to ride a bit
first day without rain in the evening
I sat in the car, took the key and turned it
nothing happened,
where is the red light?
where the clack from the fuel pump?
nothing
grrr
12,6 V ,
should be ok
I run the warning lights they work
no horn no light nothing
after a few minutes i looked behind the dashboard

I saw the yellow wire that didn't seem to be connected properly.

I put it together and now everything works again
apparently i disconnected it yesterday while installing the brake excluder

the car now drives completely different than before
it now accelerates almost perfectly, a few more adjustments on the carburetor then it will be perfect for sure

but I like to screw, so not bad
i hope weekend without rain, so i can test it some more

we will have a few warm days ;-)

just back from a 15 km round
the first km when the car was cold some unround moments
but then
i can not believe it
the car runs from 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm without any error
can drive with 2000 rpm like never before
now it is like an english sports car
i have never driven a TC or TD so no direct comparison, unfortunately
but so I am really satisfied
let's see what happens now

driven 110 km today without any problems
visit some friend at Schloss Oberwerries near Hamm
with 2900 rpm at a speed of 65 we had most fun to drive it

the car runs up and down completely different than before
only problem at the moment,
oil from the side cover and the speedo drive
also very little from the oil drain and transmission oil drain plug
before also oil came out of the cylinder head cover, but is the new gasket from Engolit already inside, additionally sealed with very little silicone additionally
there comes now already times nothing more
to remove the steitendekcel I must probably take out the distributor
there i can install teh micro adjuster bought some month ago

Post by Franz Tenbrock » Thu Aug 24, 2023 12:28 pm

after this wonderful weekend when the car ran better than before
I decided to do something against these oily problems

the side cover, the valve cover, the oil drain plugs and the speedo cable drive.

the engolit gaskets for the side cover and the valve cover I had already bought a few weeks ago

the valve cover i took off without problems
but there were problems with the aluminum side cover
I could not remove the cover
the distributor was so tight on the cover that I couldn't takethe cover off

only after I had taken off the distributor i could take off the side cover, the cork seal was almost gone.
cleaned everything and mounted the cover with Engolit and REINZOSIL.

Now CD wrote me that I can't just put the distributor back in because it is misaligned

But now I also had another problem.
The aluminum cover with the Engolit seal is now thicker than before, the distributor did not go all the way in
The material is very thick at this point. I took a cylindrical grinder and grinded it so that the distributor now fits again. But in reality it was much more complicated.

now it is ok

After all this excitement, I decided to adjust the valves as well.
I had never done anything like this before.
To adjust the ignition, the valve cover has to be taken off
so o took it off

with the crank turn the crankshaft so far that the valves of the 1st cylinder are free, here I had 0.50 play, so even with Laystallkopf clearly too much
Now I adjusted with a friend all valves aud 0,25 mm.
After this action I moved the distributor in and out umpteen times until the finger pointed to the 1st ignition cable at OT

also here a shortcut, it took a little longer.

but now it starts perfectly
runs very smooth at idle at 1000 rpm
at 3500 rpm 35degres bevore OT

revs up happily like never before
runs much smoother-
the side cover is finally on.
new engine oil and oil filter installed
also at the valve cover no more oil comes out

now I will change the speedo drive this weekend
fill up new gearbox oil
and hope that i will find only a few oil spots under the car

the Rover mini 1997 of my son is on my lifting platform, there some rust spots and minor other problems. I will then hopefully be able to change the rear engine mounts, especially the left do not look good

always something to do with this old cars
but after all this work, my Ta will be better then the last 30 years

today a few pictures ;-)

i got an overhauled speedo drive from Declan
my sister lives with him around the corner and she visited my mother at the weekend, so we didn't have to send the valuable parts by mail
first step was to jack up the car as my son's mini is on my little car lift, this took me more time then the change
I had already made a picture of the installation situation a few days ago and was pleased that there was a hexagon bolt to see
the 2nd screw I could not see in the picture
now in the jacked up state I could now see why there are slotted screws, it's just very very little space, today you would certainly take Torx there
no matter
I was lucky, the screws were quite easy to solve and the removal is now finished,
I will install it then this afternoon
I'm still waiting for an answer whether I should take the rubber seal there again or just some silicone seal
are

last step for this year: change of the engine holder in the back :P

I install them with a paper gasket and a small amount of sealer. The lip seal is interesting, I haven't seen that before. It must be tiny! I've used the o-ring type before however.

I got the speedo drive from Declan last weekend,
also I got a paper to make my own gasket from a friend of mine
so i made my own gasket
when i got this gasket with silicone in my hands i saw that the gearing is different from my old part
i looked at the picture i made a few days ago
it is a different gear
a friend lives in neuss near declan, and the next day he went home to neuss, so he took this part back to declan
in the meantime declan made my speedo drive and i hope the part will arrive tomorrow

today i changed the transmission mount
both sides like jelly
it was a terrible job
first i loosend the nuts

i took my jack and pushed the engine up a little bit

some years back someone changed both holders
on the left side the screws are still original i think
they come from the back to the front and go there in the thread of the transmission mount
on the right side the thread was probably no longer good and one has taken there going through bolts
unfortunately vón back to front, so I could not remove the middle screw, the holder of the transmission tunnel was in the way,
I have cut off the screw head, only so I could remove the old holder
the installation was then done quite quickly, now the screws the right way around, so that in a few years you can make the change easier
I have of course taken safety nuts for it.

here you can see my jelly gearbox holders
also i change the plastic speedo and tacho cable to metale cased one

Hi my friends
the car is running now perfect
steering straight on with less play
breaking good and straight on
idle smoth and runnig up to 4000 rpm total different then before
much more power with the blue bosch coil

on my first run i haven not seen that the first spark plug was not connected so the car runs not as good as before
at home i checked for oil leaks and saw it
silly boy
all oil leaks i had before are ok now only in the middle you know the point there is some oil
i will make a drip bottle there

the second run with all 4 spark plug it was fantastic, drove the car for 30 min.

the right horn doesn t work, only a little mistake i think because when i overhauled it last winter it works on my bench

i hope we have some warm days in september, august was a lot of rain, good for nature bad for my car

today we visit a house that looks like houses in the 50s
everything in the house is original
funny things,
today is industrial culture day
the owner of this house lives in the 5th generation in this settlement, his grandparents have lived here, he has restored the house in a lot of small work as it was in the 50s, he lives there and uses these things even today
the street was actually closed for cars, but a few oldtimers were allowed to drive in anyway

in the pdf file you can see some things from the 50s, used until today

also is overhauled the break master cylinder from my spartan, after i have done it for my TA i wasn t afraid to do it for the spartan too, learned a lot the last years
