Fuel Tank to Wing Bolt and Bushing

Post by robj » Thu Sep 26, 2024 10:30 pm

So after much pondering I figured the best way to get the rear wheel opening correct on my tub would be to match it to the fender. [I can build the tub but I can't change the fender]

Mine were missing so I ordered the tank to wing bushings from FTFU. [# RU 150]
Well the ID of the bush is 5/8" and the shoulder of the bolt is 3/8" + or -.
In addition the bolts are about 15/16" and the length of the bush is about the same.

FTFU has bolts, one "looks" like mine, maybe,[looks longer to me] #BSP 110 Says it's !" but that looks like it's the length of the shoulder.
They offer a second bolt #BSP 111 that's 1 1/4", Longer than stock bolt to correct rear wing "inner tuck" to the tank. Length: 1 1/4"]

Regardless both bolts look longer than mine and I'll probably need one or the other.
But my real question is the bushing. It looks like the I.D. is way too large. In addition the bush has a very slight shoulder on the outside. I can't see where that does anything.
Is that just how it is?

Thanks,
robj

Hi Tim,

That's what I ordered as pictured above. [#RU 150] But they really don't seem right. The ID of the hole is so much larger than the OD of the shaft on the bolt.

I'm not saying it's right, but it probably won't make any difference once it's tightened down.

I had a different problem. I have had to marry a new tub with new rear wings and a new petrol tank.

The wings needed the bolt holes to be made so that was not an issue. What did throw me was the stainless steel petrol tank. It had been made 1/4" narrower than the original so that meant making some longer bolts. I then discovered that the brackets with their captive nuts needed to be moved forward by 1/4" or the the wings would be bolted incorrectly.

Getting these things right is time consuming and frustrating but the finished result is definitely worth it. :)
