This thread has now almost reached a place in the "eternal" gallery of this forum next to the steering box, engine oils and what more?
Re: Fill level for Girling Dampers on TC

Re: Fill level for Girling Dampers on TC
Thanks for all the entertaining chat here.
Since I started this rambling discussion, I feel it only appropriate to attempt to end it and hit page 3 in the process! I did fill my dampers with jack oil as that what was handy and had already purchased it before the other suggestions. While inspecting the dampers I noticed that without replacing all 8 of the rubber bushings I was still going to have an "interesting" ride. Ordered the Moss versions and attempted to replace one of them. After 3 hours and teaching the neighbors some new and interesting words , I pull all 4 dampers off the TC and took them to the local MG man. 3 1/5 later he completed them and off I went to install. Found that the read set of damper were installed back to front, just how the Moss catalog showed them!! Took them back down to the shop and the mechanic took a look at some old TC parts and agreed that they were backwards. (I had photos to show the same). SO now at the end of the week I have them back on the car. Took it for a drive yesterday and WOW what a difference. I'm no longer driving an apple cart!!
Anyway thanks for all the banter, as always we learn a lot for these lively discussions.

Next project - brakes and speedometer...

Better than jack oil is motorcycle fork oil. It's designed to be heavily agitated without foaming. With jack oil, you don't really know what additives have been mixed in, so you don't know if the shocks are working at their best.

So how would one go about un-filling a damper?

Only way I can think of is turn it upside down! Jack oil might be fine, just depends on what that particular manufacturer put in it! I like 20W motorcycle fork oil, or Armstrong lever shock oil. Fork oil is just cheaper and easier to find.

Then jack oil is staying in there!! Not take those dampers off again.
Thanks

20 wt. motorcycle fork oil . Then up or down depending on ride preference.
