TC 6710 burnt floor panel

Post by Norman Golm » Sun Feb 17, 2013 11:25 am

I am currently restoring TC 6710, Chip Old's car and I thought all of you may be interested in the attached photos. It looks like at one time Chip had a thermal event in his car. The burnt area is near and above the front of the muffler. I have no way of knowing if the muffler had a hole in it or the proximity of the muffler to the floor board caused the problem, but it is definitely burned. The white asbestos board was covering the hole from underneath the floor board. Chip what's that smell?

When I took TC8975 on its first highway run, the added heat from an open throttle was enough to get the muffler much hotter than it had at lower speeds. Unknown to me, the previous owner used some long wood screws to hold the seat tracks down. The screws protruded out of the wood and right into the muffler can. When the muffler got hot enough, the screws transferred the exhaust heat to the seat tracks, and smoke started coming out from beneath the driver's seat. Now THAT was unnerving! I shut it down, coasted off the highway into a truck stop, grabbed a hose and soaked the carpet under the seat. At the time I couldn't see anything wrong. It was only after driving slowly home and removing the seats that I finally found the cause and remedied it. The carpet was singed, but otherwise no damage.

I had this happen in the TB some 45 years ago, and the seat below me was suddenly on fire too! Embarasingly, right in the middle of the High Street in Bridport at lunch time, Disconcerting to say the least!
